Explanation of private well map
I requested from the State Engineer Office in Greeley, CO a list of all wells in their database for Township 7 North, Rang 69 West, Sections 5, 6, 7, and 8.
The list included
· Address for the holder of the well permit. (Sometimes that coincided with the well location.)
· Depth of wells that had been completed. (When the depth was 0, I assume the well was never constructed.)
· Use of well
· Location of well to nearest quarter/quarter section
I plotted the locational info two different ways: One way using Mapquest to plot address locations; the second way hand plotting approximate locations according to quarter/quarter section info.
Conclusions: The hogback is located to the west of the facility through the west half of section 6 and most of section 7 except for the NE corner. The strata are dipping to the northeast, steeply at the hogback and at a more shallow angle where the CDOW lab is located. Influenced by the dipping strata, the general flow of groundwater in the area is to the northeast. Locally, at the CDOW lab there are three intermittent surface drainage directions, toward the southeast in Dixon Canal and to College Lake, to the north an intermittent drainage flows due north, and the closest drainage is located approximately .2 mile due south of the CDOW lab and flows due east for 3/4 mile. The nearest down gradient well is a crop irrigation well about 3/4 miles away from the lab in a east southeast direction. The well is completed at a depth of 76 feet and belongs to Woodward in SWNE Section 8, . The second closest well is completed at a depth of 250 feet in NWSE Section 8. The next closest shallow wells are about 1 mile away. They are the Goodwin, Dudley and Wisseman wells completed at depths of 26, 23 and 24 feet respectively all located in NENE Section 8, and CSU physical plant well completed at 16 feet in SWSE Section 8.
Summary of well information:
Section 5: There are 6 wells listed, all for domestic or household use. One well was a cancelled permit. Of the 6, two addresses listed probably corresponded with the actual well location. Three of the addresses did not occur in section 5. The address locations are shown on the Mapquest map labeled Sec 5. One address was not a street address so it was not able to be mapped. 3 wells were shallow, ranging from 52 to 30 feet. I also plotted the quarter/quarter section information on a topo map to represent roughly where the wells are actually located.
Section 6: There are 3 wells in Section 6. Two are for domestic use; one is a monitoring well. The addresses listed are in Denver, Longmont, and Loveland, so I did not plot the addresses on a Mapquest map. I plotted the quarter/quarter section information on a topo map. One well for domestic use has a depth of 30 feet and the other a depth of 150 feet. According to the quarter/quarter section information, all 3 wells are upgradient of the CDOW lab.
Section 7: There are 5 wells in Section 7. According to the Mapquest map based on the listed addresses, none of the wells fall into Section 7. According to the quarter/quarter section map I drew up, all 5 wells are located upgradient of the CDOW well.
Section 8: There are 11 wells in Section 8. Two of the wells appear to have been recompleted in a deeper aquifer. One well was then abandoned. One well was for “other use;” two wells are for crop irrigation. The rest of the wells are for domestic use.
