The NVSL/CVB Animal Use Biosafety Committee and the IACUC requested the use
of bedding and maintaining a dry barn to protect the environment. It was
also requested by the State Veterinarian in Iowa.
It is known the CWD is an environmental contaminate from work done at
Colorado State University. It most likely is a fecal contamination that
occurs, but that is not entirely proven (good research project). It is known
the sewage treatment does not kill prions, and it is also known that CWD is
coming this direction naturally.
If you wish to pursue going another route, a proposal will need to be
presented to the NVSL and CVB Directors for approval since it is an
environmental issue. The State Veterinarian should be notified as it was
requested by them.
